InterSpeech 2005

On September 4-8, 2005, Dr. Baker and Dr. Pugliese attended Interspeech 2005, the 9th European Conference on Speech Communication and Technology in Lisbon, Portugal. While there, we conducted interviews with several senior scientists. In addition, Dr. Baker chaired a panel discussion on the history of speech technology. The theme for this panel is as follows:

After a brief description of the Saras Institute History of Speech Technology Project, each panelist will be asked to (1) identify some key milestones or events which have occurred in the history of speech technology during their carreers, and to (2) discuss the particular circumstances that enabled those events to happen at that time. The goal of this panel is to stimulate interest in appreciating important technical achievements and business developments in speech technology, and to understand the circumstances under which they occurred.

The following Speech Scientists contributed presentations to the "Panel: History of Speech Technology" chaired by Janet M. Baker:

Fant, Gunnar (Dr. Fant could not be present. His text was read by Dr. Pols and is available here.)

Flanagan, James L. (Dr. Flanagan could not be present. His text was read by Dr. Baker and is available here.)

Fujisaki, Hiroya

Mariani, Joseph (The slides prepared by Dr. Mariani for this talk are available here.)

Pols, Louis (The slides prepared by Dr. Pols for this talk are available here.)
